Austell’s Rich Natural History

Modern day Austell began as a small settlement in the early 1800s. Trappers and game hunters were attracted to the area due to the natural springs. Word soon spread that the spring water had healing properties and the area became a health destination for the wealthy and well connected.

Immigration to the area slowly increased over the ensuing years. The spring was renamed Lithia Spring and the water began to be bottled and sold as Bowden Lithia Spring Water. The historic spring water is still active and the water is now bottled and sold as Lithia Spring Water.

In the late 1800s the Georgia Pacific Railway chose Austell to be a station depot. This helped to consolidate the growing town. Austell was formally incorporated in 1885. The town is named after General Austell who founded the Atlanta National Bank which would eventually become part of Wachovia and later Wells Fargo.
