The name Ball Ground is thought to originally refer to the area of land rather than the town itself. Native Americans used the area that would eventually become the town to play a game similar to town ball (an early version of baseball).

Legend has it that in 1532 Native Americans played a game of town ball against Hernando de Soto and his men. The game was umpired by the owner of the Fountain of Youth. During the game a fight broke out and the umpire was killed, taking the secret of the Fountain of Youth with him to the grave.
