The Birth of ‘Leather City’

During the Civil War the construction of the Richmond and Danville Railroad System helped to lay the foundations of what would become Buford. The town was originally named after Algernon Sidney Buford, who was president of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway. After the war the town rapidly expanded. It was incorporated as the Town of Buford in 1872 and ultimately renamed the City of Buford in 1896.

By the early 1900s Buford had become nationally known for its leather production. The city was one of the country’s most successful manufacturer of saddles, horse collars and bridles. Buford's leather goods were featured in the Sears mail order catalog and were preferred by many cowboy stars including Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. The city became so closely associated with leather goods that it earned the nickname ‘Leather City’.
