Brookhaven, Georgia is situated in the Northeastern suburbs of Atlanta. It is the largest city in DeKalb County covering over 12 square miles.

Brookhaven’s Changing History

Brookhaven’s history is a story of change and reinvention. One of its first permanent residents was John Evins, who began construction on a plantation in the area around 1810. Not long afterward Harris and Solomon Goodwin purchased the land and became the acknowledged founders of the city. The Goodwin family home and graveyard has been preserved and is one of Brookhaven’s most visited historical sites.

In the early 1900s Atlanta residents began building summer cottages in what was then called North Atlanta. Country clubs and golf courses were built to attract wealthy Northerners and Atlanta’s elites. Major commercial and residential development took place throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Still known only as North Atlanta, it would take the turn of a new century to see the true birth Brookhaven as we know it today. In 2012 the incorporation of Brookhaven was finalized, and the city took on a new name and fresh future.
